Why I Cloth Diaper

1. economy: though this is actually very debatable. There is the cost of water and the use of my washing machine. My cousin gets amazing deals on her disposables because she is the coupon queen. But since I mostly use prefold diapers (1.00 each) and will reuse for more than one child, I think that we will save money. Also, in Monroe, they have some kind of wierd system for charging for water… And I haven’t really seen the cost go up since I started washing my diapers.

2. sustainable: I am reusing a product over and over… can sell or donate the diapers when I am done or even use as rags. Sally’s grandma has cloth diapers in her rag box that she used on Mark. Also, we aren’t filling up our garbage every week with plastic un-biodegradable diapers.

3. health: Sally does like cloth better. and the more organic the better. Her sensitive skin does so much better with the cotton than the disposables. Ive tested it and I prefer the hassle of washing my diapers than the convenience of the disposables. Sally’s bottom thanks me too!

Other notes:

  • Mark doesn’t mind the cloth diapers, as long as I take care of the laundry. (he does help me fold though!)
  • Cute Cute Cute fluffy bottom with all kinds of pretty colors and prints! How can I resist??
  • Leaking: I found that she has less blowouts with cloth than the disposables. Which is nicer on the clothes. Night time she can be wet sometimes, but I think that’s just because I need to add more layers for nighty-night.

Cloth Diapers

My cousin asked me recently about which Cloth Diapers I am going to use when the baby comes. I emailed her the below and thought it was a good compilation of all the research I have been doing the last year.

A couple of blogs I read: ( I use Google reader and keep them all in one place instead of looking at them separately) Great places to read about other people’s experiences…

There are different kinds of cloth diapers:
  • AIO (all in ones) (they don’t need covers but can be harder to wash and dry and are the most expensive,) fit baby for a long time (Bum Genius is one that everyone says is the best and Goodmama has a great AIO too but they sell out quick and are more expensive)
  • Pocket (don’t need covers, you “stuff” the insides); Thirsties and Fuzzi Bunz
  • Fitted: need covers, fit baby snug, but you have to buy different sizes. Goodmamas
  • Hybrid: a “system” diaper like Flip or GroBaby. Can be versatile, cloth or disposable, economical
  • Prefolds: economical, needs covers. The cheapest way to go
  • Covers: not the plastic gerber pants, but some great products are out there! Thirsties  and Bummis have some great covers!!
Here are a couple of websites that I like for shopping:
Other items:
  • Laundry Detergent: It is important to have the right kind of laundry detergent and to wash the diapers correctly, or else I guess they can get stinky…. the one EVERYONE raves about is called:
Rockin’ Green  http://rockingreensoap.com/  I am going to try that one out… there are a lot on the blogs about the best way to wash, but it sounds like soaking and using an extra rinse helps along with drying in the sun (as using bleach is a no-no)
  • Diaper Sprayer: This is for after baby starts eating food and not just nursing… you can hook it up to the toilet and spray the poop off.
  • Wet Bags: great little bags to put the diapers in… I bought a cute metal garbage can with a lid at Ikea and one of these wet bag pail liners for the nursery… people normally was a load every other day or every three days, so they don’t stack up like disposables and stink up the house. They have all kinds of cute wet bags for travel that you can get for your diaper bag.
